What Is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is the medical term used to describe an abnormal curvature of the spine from side to side. Kyphosis and Lordosis are used to describe an abnormal curvature of the spine from back to front. Scoliosis describes the curvature of the spine in the lateral direction.

There are a few common causes of scoliosis. While some people might develop scoliosis following a traumatic accident, the vast majority of the cases of scoliosis develop in children as their spine grows. As their spine grows, it might not grow straight. Some cases of scoliosis are not picked up until adulthood, which is why this condition is seen in all ages.

The symptoms of scoliosis will vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some people with very mild degrees of curvature might not notice any symptoms at all. Those with severe forms of scoliosis might have compression of their abdominal or chest organs, leading to serious symptoms.

The Types of Scoliosis

There are a few types of scoliosis that people might develop. These include:

  • Thoracic Scoliosis: This type of scoliosis takes place in the chest. Severe forms of this form of scoliosis might compress the lungs, making it hard to breathe.
  • Thoracolumbar Scoliosis: This type of scoliosis impacts both the chest and the abdomen. While might forms of this scoliosis might not lead to symptoms, severe curvature could lead to both chest and GI symptoms.
  • Lumbar Scoliosis: This type of scoliosis impacts the bottom portion of the spine. Severe forms of lumbar scoliosis could lead to GI symptoms including constipation and diarrhea.
  • Double Curve Scoliosis: Those with double curve scoliosis have two separate curves in the spine. They are usually in opposite directions. This form of scoliosis can be worse than the others but this is not always the case.

Non-Surgical Scoliosis Treatments

If you have been diagnosed with scoliosis of the spine, then you might think that surgery is in your future. This is not always the case. There are a few other treatment options which include:

Chiropractor adjusting female patients back

  • Brace: A back brace can be used to apply constant, gradual pressure on the spine to move it back into the right position. Over time, we can tighten and loosen the back brace as the patient makes progress, slowly moving the spine into the right position without surgery.
  • Weight Loss: In many cases, scoliosis is made worse by excessive weight. This places a lot of pressure on the spine, moving it out of position. We may recommend weight loss as a part of our treatment plans to alleviate the pressure on the spine and move it back into the right position.
  • Chiropractic Care: Finally, you Fort Wayne chiropractor will use chiropractic adjustments and manipulations to gradually shift the vertebrae in the spine back to the right location. Eventually, the spine will be back where it belongs and scoliosis can be resolved.

These are a few of the scoliosis treatment options that we provide. We can tailor our treatment plans to meet your unique needs. We may be able to keep you out of the operating room!
